Hollow City by Ransom Riggs: Book Review!

Hello, everyone! I'm back, and I'm here to review Hollow City by Ransom Riggs, the second novel of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. This novel pics up right where MPHFPC left off. Jacob is stuck in the 1940s trying to help the children and Miss Peregrine find the only ymbryne that hasn't been taken by hollows. Their journey leads to many peculiar locations including more time loops! But enough about that. Let's get onto the review!

Let me just say that that this is a great follow up to MPHFPC. It expands peculiardom (which is what they call their world of peculiars), and it set ups some nice twists and turns that makes you say "Wow!" at the ending. The style of writing is fluid and appealing, and for once I don't have to deal with the dual perspective that everyone seems to be jumping on. If you don't know, I'm very happy with this series so far.

This book expands peculiardom with new characters, stories, and time loops. One of my favorite new additions is the peculiar animals. I would hate to give anything away, but I will say that these peculiar animals were unexpected, and their peculiarity is pretty unique. It also seems like we'll be seeing more of them in the next (and final unfortunately) book.

Our characters also grew in this novel, which is a good and necessary thing. We learn a bit more of each perculiars quirks. While some are very understandable, others I found to be a bit surprising, which is a good thing. Another aspect that get delved deeper into is the fact that while these perculiars appear to be teenagers and younger, they are actually decades if not hundreds of years old. It brings a whole other complexity to their character, and I can't wait to learn more about them in the next book.

One of the problems that I had with the first book was that I felt that some of the parts were a little predictable. While there were hints and a good build up to the conclusion of this book, I can definitely say that I did not see that ending coming. Again, no spoilers! With the surprising ending and a cliff hanger that stays with you, I found myself looking up the release date of Library of Souls, and then crying a little when it was still a week away (at least when I finished the book, not posted this).

Also don't forget to tune into the book talk that will be happening later this month about Hollow City. Booksplosion BookTubers Xtinemay Katytastic and JesseTheReader will be hosting on YouTube on September 26! I'll tweet the link when it is available.

So with everything said and done I'm giving this book five pigeons out of five!
